Looking at a map of the area and the path of the river, it is a pretty tight curve that swings around. The Vilander Bluff Natural Area is a unit of the state park that is located at 38°05′56″N 91°08′20″W, 7 miles (11 km) northeast of the main body of the park. Vilander Bluff is the tallest bluff located on the Meramec river and contains some of the oldest eastern red cedars in the state of Missouri and have been found to be between 200 and 500 years old.

This very unique 225 acre area contains a wide variety of deciduous trees, wildflowers, ferns and other plant life; made accessible by a carefully laid out loop trail. Lookout points along the 2 mile trail allow hikers an excellent view of the Des Moines River Valley. The TVA River Bluff Small Wild Area Trail is a National Recreation Trail as well as a Tennessee Scenic Trail, located on the TVA Norris Dam Reservation in Anderson County, TN. The 125-acre site features old growth hardwoods, pine plantations and rich pockets of wildflowers and ferns.
